Huntsman Spiders

Bites usually result only in local pain and swelling. However, seek medical attention if the symptoms persist.

Redback Spiders

Redback bites occur frequently. They can cause serious illness and have caused deaths. Because of their small jaws, many bites are ineffective. Common early symptoms are pain, sweating (always including local sweating at the bite site), muscular weakness, nausea and vomiting. An antivenom is available in hospitals.

Apply an ice pack to the bitten area to relieve the pain. Do not apply a pressure bandage (venom movement is slow and pressure worsens pain). If possible, collect the spider for positive identification. Seek urgent medical attention.

White Tail Spiders

Symptoms are usually confined to local mind stinging or burning pain, sometimes followed by development of an itchy lump. An ice pack may relieve local pain. Seek medical attention if symptoms persist.

The toxicity of chemicals are determined by their LD50 value. LD50 is an abbreviation for the Lethal Dose 50% or median lethal dose. It indicates the amount of substance required to kill 50% of the test population. It is measured by milligrams of chemical to kilograms of body weight.

The smaller the LD50 value, the more toxic the chemical.

Two commonly used synthetic pyrethroids are Deltamethrin and Bifenthrin. Deltamethrin is used for quarantine in the export of wild flowers from WA and Tas. And Bifenthrin is registered for use on apples, bananas, carnations, cotton and roses.
