How bad are rats?

Of all the pests we have to contend with, rats rank right up the top as most hated. There are a number of well founded reasons for this, the most prominent being that they were responsible for the deaths of around a third of the population of Europe in the Middle Ages when the Bubonic Plague swept through the continent. This placed the rat at the top of the hate list, where it has resided ever since, but is our hatred of rats rational? Are they really such a bad pest?

The answer is yes, rats are one of the most odious pests and not simply because of the Bubonic Plague. The major problem with rats is that as a mammalian pest they carry more human communicable diseases than most other pests, disease such as  Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, Lassa Fever, Leptospirosis, Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM), Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever, Plague, Rat-Bite Fever, Salmonellosis and Tularemia.

However, as anyone who has lived through a rat infestation will tell you, the psychological disturbance is bad enough. Having rats in your walls and on your cooking surfaces is depressing and it only takes a few days for you to begin to feel stressed.
